Gum Disease and COVID

COVID. Gum disease. Diet. It’s all connected…! See this article from Dr. Danenberg for more.

The underlying process is inflammation.

“The gum tissues in your mouth are susceptible to chronic systemic inflammation. The oxidative stress occurring from an excess of unhealthy oxidized iron causes the immune system to create acute and chronic systemic inflammation. These physiological changes cause dysfunction in the immune system – especially if the immune system was already weakened or dysfunctional from emotional stress, environmental toxic substances, an unhealthy gut, or poor diet choices.”

Gum disease and the immune system are really tightly in sync, because inflammation anywhere is inflammation EVERYWHERE. When your immune system is weak, it shows up in your mouth (via the gums first), and when your mouth isn’t healthy it causes downstream hyperactivity and dysfunction of your immune system.

Microorganisms (outnumbering our human cells ten to one!) and their chemical signals are constantly interacting with and helping to regulate our body’s systems and processes. Proper support of our microflora is essential in order to properly support our immune system and properly regulate inflammation in our bodies. That support mainly comes in the form of diet and nutrition! My favorite mantra: it’s all connected!
